Intelligent Infrastructure Systems (IIS), LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pennoni Associates Inc. located in Philadelphia, dedicated to assisting bridge owners develop strategies for indefinite preservation and achieving optimal asset life cycle cost.

We are seeking a Senior Bridge Engineer I with experience in evaluation of bridge performance (operations and maintenance) employing structural health monitoring systems, refined load rating, finite element analysis and modeling. Opportunity also exists to research and develop new technologies to address specific challenges facing bridge owners to safely operate and maintain their infrastructure.

The successful candidate will manage a team of experts to plan and manage multi-disciplinary projects on various small, large and signature bridges projects across the country including bridges engineered and constructed through traditional and alternative delivery methods including public private partnerships (P3)

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Manage projects according to defined scope, schedule and fee.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships
  • Independently prepare proposals, schedules and estimate budgets.
  • Prepare reports with actionable conclusions and recommendations for infrastructure owners.
  • Lead project teams in the performance of structural condition evaluation, load capacity rating, and conducting research on structural performance.
  • Coordinate with the Bridge Design Group to develop the design of operations, preservation and retrofit of various transportation structures such as highway and railway bridges, overhead sign structures and others.
  • Oversee the development of finite element models for structural identification and scenario analyses of existing or new structures to evaluate their performance.
  • Provide expertise and support to other transportation bridge design teams throughout Pennoni .
  • Oversee the execution of quality assurance and quality control protocols.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering while a PhD is desired.
  • Professional Engineer License, and Structural Engineer Certification is desired.
  • 10+ years of progressive structural bridge engineering experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Staff supervision/management experience.
  • Project and/or task management experience.
  • Bridge design, structural analysis and load rating experience and demonstrating knowledge of finite element analysis.
  • Knowledge of a number of software packages (i.e. LARSA, CSIBridge, STAAD, SAP, AASHTOWare, others as well as MATLAB and Mathcad).

May occasionally require working outdoors in various geographic regions and in wide variety of weather conditions and facilities. May be required to climb structures after receiving mandatory safety training to include but not limited to OSHA 10 Hour, fall protection and confined space training. May also be required to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to complete the 40-hr NBIS Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges course (NHI 130055) and PennDOT Basic Bridge Safety Inspection Certification (CBSI).
  • Knowledge of drafting software packages – MicroStation and/or AutoCAD Civil3D required.
