Job Description

Intelligent Infrastructure Systems (IIS), LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pennoni Associates Inc., is seeking a qualified candidate to join our Philadelphia office as a Senior Engineer I. The successful candidate will work with and lead a team of experts to plan and manage multi-disciplinary projects, such as design and install structural health monitoring systems, design and execute structural load testing and refined analysis, evaluate structural performance and conduct bridge inspection and structural evaluations to identify optimal maintenance, retrofit actions and indefinite structural preservation strategies for complex bridges.

The work will be performed on various small, large and signature bridges projects across the country including bridges engineered and constructed through traditional and alternative delivery methods including public private partnerships (P3). We expect work involving both highway and rail bridges, including major long-span bridges, moveable bridges and other constructed infrastructures such as buildings, power-line and antenna towers, pipelines, dams, etc.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Manage projects, clients and the overall business unit
  • Independently prepare proposals, schedules and estimate budgets.
  • Prepare reports with actionable conclusions and recommendations for infrastructure owners.
  • Lead project teams in the performance of structural condition evaluation, load capacity rating, design of operations, preservation and retrofit of various transportation structures such as highway and railway bridges, overhead sign structures and others.
  • Develop finite element models for structural identification and scenario analyses of existing or new structures to evaluate their performance.
  • Develop structural designs based on the findings of analyses and requirements for inclusion in a PS&E package.
  • Provide expertise and support to other transportation bridge design teams throughout Pennoni and IIS on as needed basis.
  • Coordinate with Pennoni’s Bridge Inspection Practice Leader to participate in challenging bridge inspections.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is required while a PhD is desired.
  • Professional Engineer License required, and Structural Engineer Certification is desired.
  • 10+ years of progressive structural bridge engineering experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Staff supervision/management experience required.
  • Project and/or task management experience is required.
  • Bridge design, structural analysis and load rating experience desirable.
  • Demonstrate good knowledge of finite element analysis.
  • Knowledge of a number of software packages is desirable (Strand7, STAAD, SAP, ABAQUS, AASHTO Ware, others as well as MATLab and MathCAD is desirable.

May occasionally require working outdoors in various geographic regions and in wide variety of weather conditions and facilities. May be required to climb structures after receiving mandatory safety training to include but not limited to OSHA 10 Hour Road Construction, fall protection and confined space training. May also be required to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs.
